You cannot take away the pain someone is feeling, but you can try and ease it with some comforting words of sympathy.  You may also find sympathy phrases to be a helpful resource. Being there for someone, just as a quiet body next to them and sharing your thoughts of happiness for them may just be what they need to help them through this very difficult time.
